It’s so simple to love.

Isn’t it amazing how unpredictable people are? One day we’re having the best day of our lives, and the next day the roof is caving in. Is it because we’re more emotional than we are rational? Who knows. I’m not here to explain human nature. I’m here to tell you a story about a woman who changed my entire day in one interaction.

I will shamelessly admit that I love Burger King iced coffee. They aren’t paying me to say that, it’s just the truth. It’s the perfect combination of coffee and milk, and it reminds me of early morning studying in college. If you love sweet coffee, you’ve got to try it.

So one morning I had to give a pitch at a prospect’s office. I left feeling good about the presentation, and as I was driving, I noticed a Burger King ahead. I got over through three lanes of traffic as fast as I could. Burger King iced coffee is that good.

After I ordered my coffee I approached the window. The woman standing on the other side had a big smile on her face. She greeted me with a big “good morning,” and I couldn’t help but smile back. She made a joke about needing her coffee, and we went back and forth for a little while just laughing together. Sure, I was really excited about the goodness I was about to consume, but I was really enjoying this woman.

I left that drive-thru feeling refreshed and a little bit sad that I’d likely never see her again.

My day was made better by that interaction, and it didn’t take much. I went back to my office and felt ready to face the day. I had a smile on my face all morning. It really was that easy. And I’m pretty sure my coffee tasted better.

There’s something about feeling connected to a total stranger that gives me hope in a world that can be so dark. We’re all struggling, so why not treat each other well when we can?

Even if you’re having a bad day, there’s still no excuse to treat people poorly. We all have bad days. It’s not easy to orbit the sun. Always greet with a smile. Laugh with strangers. Take opportunities to make someone’s day better. It’s so simple to love.
