halloween spirit

I love the burnt colors of fall, the spiced lattes, and of course, Halloween spirit.

There’s a ton of interesting history surrounding the holiday. I recently read this account on the History Channel’s website and learned a lot.

What’s not to love about kids dressing up as their favorite characters and running from door to door to get candy? It’s such a youthful excitement. Even at 23 years old I get excited talking about costumes and Halloween sweets.

When you were a kid, Halloween spirit wasn’t hard to find.

You had endless costume ideas, and plenty of friends ready to ravage the neighborhood with. You set out on an adventure to collect an irresponsible amount of sugar, and you always succeeded. The late night Halloween candy bartering always got me riled up. Really, when else can you use peanut butter cups as currency?

In college, the holiday always meant some outrageous party full of inadequately dressed young women and unusual mixed drinks. Seriously, nobody wants cinnamon in their beer. The parties really weren’t that different from others during the year. Except for the unusual amount of pumpkin décor. That was a pretty significant difference. But college years are also long gone now, so Halloween spirit needs to be redefined again.

This is my first Halloween with my new husband, so it’s more exciting than usual.

We don’t have kids, so it’s not socially acceptable to trick or treat (bummer). We will be going to a party though, so I’m hoping there will be enough sugar there to tame the child inside of me. If there’s not, I may have to find a mask that hides my age so that I can go fake out my neighbors for candy.

It’s time to embrace the changing seasons and unleash some youthful excitement. Dress up and eat baked goods shaped like insects. I do know one thing for sure- I will be getting my Halloween spirit on tomorrow.
